5.5.3 Reading, Writing, Directions

materials: larger version on the same map from the homework page, paper dolls of Julie-Minsu-Zeeto. for each table: whiteboard, eraser, dry-erase marker.
Greetings: Check Homework, hand-on review with map on board.
Activity: Reverse Directions.
Newlywed game style.
Each table should have: whiteboard, eraser, dry-erase marker
Using the map on their homework, students should listen to teacher's directions.
Then, as a group, they can decide on the location I am talking about. Is it the 7-11? the bank? the flowershop? After they've revealed their answers, we go over the directions with the paper dolls on the board.

R.D. SCRIPT:
Minsu, go straight, you can't miss it! It = ?
Zeeto, go straight and turn Left at the doctor's office. It is JUST beside the doctor's office.
It = ?
Julie, Go straight, turn right at the park, then Left at MCDonald's. then go straight. it is accross from the 7-eleven. It = ?

Textbook, count with me, "40, 41,42,43,44, turn to page 44, please!"
Read - as they read, ask them to use the words in a sentence.

Word Search (p44) after they've had some time to find the words, kids can come up to the board One at a time, pointing out the words on the screen.
Write - hand motions, name & sound then write.

5.5.2 Directions

Lesson#2: Reinforce what we just learned. have fun! play games/practice vocabulary!
This lesson will be demonstrated for Open Class with 5-4 class helping out!
Set up classroom in a circle. kids come in as groups, put their books on the table, and sit together in chairs around the circle.
Greetings: Check books, S&J, notebooks.
What Day is it today? How are you? chant... (if there's time)

What do you say when you don't understand what someone just said?
GAME: Play ZIP...ZAP...SORRY?
Time the students. they will be excited to try and beat the other classes, so keep score all day on the board. The first time is JUST with the ZIP...the second, add the ZAP going the opposite direction.
Final Breakdown of Scores:

(2반) 14:40 *played the more complicated version with them, to test it out.
(3반) 3:54/3:49
(4반) 3:32/3:09
(5반) 4:14/2:50
(6반) 3:07/2:17

4반 will get one more chance to win at OPEN CLASS on Wed.
(This worked, btw--kids came in after school just to see the final tally!)

5.5.1 Where is Namdemun? VOCABULARY LESSON

Lesson has A LOT of content! Teacher and Students MUST be on task in order to complete ALL content in class period!
Greetings: Today is... "What a ____day!" ball toss.
Vocabulary: Notebook entry & Powerpoint
*Students trace their hands, write Left/Right
*Draw a pencil in your writing hand, write, "I write with my RIGHT/LEFT," accordingly.
*Draw&Write about vocabulary words: Go, Straight, Turn, Turn Right, Turn Left, AT the BANK,

5.4.4 What a _____ review & TEST

Greeting: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow.
sing: "What a tall tower!" in 3-part round
Step & Jump: introduce the page number by counting--1, 10, 100...101,102,103
1st time: I say English, you say English
2nd time: You say English, I say Korean!
open textbook to page: start with 30...counting 31,32, 33, 34,35, 36, 37, 38
Write the date! Students should be writing the date on every page that they do now.

Let's Read! students should hear the word and point to the picture in their book. You can have the kids think up sentences using the words. (ex; what a small bird!)
Let's Write! practice writing the letters Pp-Tt
emphasize CAPITAL vs. LOWER CASE (the dvd says large & small, so I turn down the volume and do the talking for this on my own)
GAME: "No it's not!" a variation of the popluar game B.S. bullsh*t) have your co-teacher help explain this game if you can! have the first class cut out the lesson 4 cards from the back of the book, and save them for the following classes. this will save precious time later on!)
students follow the order of the un-cut page. tall tower, tall boy, big cow...etc.
if they don't have the card they need, they can lie and put something else down. if the other students think you're lying, they will say, "No it's not!" and check your card.
if you were lying, you take ALL the cards in the pile.
if you were truthful, the accuser must take ALL the cards in the pile.
objective, put down all your cards!
it's a great game to play with any size group, because the kids MUST use their english vocabulary in order to play the game!

Is it a nice day?
sing, "There are 7 days in the week!"

Chant: look at the window, look at the door! Look up; look down, look at the board!
quickly review the power point from last period.
phrases: Look at the ____ (sky)__!
What?/What a ___! students will change the words I say, "It is cute" to a !!! sentence. ex) "What a cute cat!"
do this until you get to the tall tower. teach the tall tower song.
(to the tune of the camp song --a pizza hut! a pizza hut! kentucky fried chicken and a pizza hut! MCDONALDS MCDONALDS! kentucky fried chicken and a pizza hut! )
I changed the words to this:

Greeting: What day is it today?
sing: "beside, under, in, on-on" one last time
Lesson objectives: Exclamative expressions, use of adjectives in these sentences.
Vocabulary: tall, short, big, small, sky, tower, bird, city
New Key phrases:
"Look at the _____!"should be pretty familiar to them by now. I am starting each class in this lesson with a chant that goes, "Look at the window, look at the door! Look up; look down, look at the board!"
using powerpoint, kids practice, "Look at ____!" use some shocking pictures.

"What a _______!"
Start by explaining the difference between What? and What!
Have students come up with other questions that start with WHAT?
...what is your name?
...what is that?!?
now go back to the powerpoint, Look at the cat!
this cat is from a previous lesson. it is what? CUTE!
let's try our new phrase: "What a cute cat!"
continue the powerpoint using the lesson's new vocabulary. look at the funny dog pictures, toss the ball around and get some fun sentences. what a cute dog, what and ugly dog. what a funny dog, etc..
